Brief Biography (If Available) | Emmanuel Babatunde John, PT, DPT, PhD, is currently an Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physical Therapy at Chapman University's Rinker Health Sciences Center, Irvine, California. Dr. John is providing visonary leadership to the second oldest physical therapists education program in the United States. The Chapman Physical Therapy program founded in 1926, was first accredited in 1928, and has maintained continued accreditation till the present. In an announcement to the Chapman University Community, Dr. Janeen Hill, the Dean of the Crean College of Health & Behavioral Sciences at Chapman University, said, "...Dr. John brings to Chapman a rich history as a clinician and academic, an international perspective on healthcare, and an extensive record of national and international professional service. Dr. John’s research spans three areas: effects of age, gender, and neurological lesions on the sense of motor effort; effects of discharge destinations and socioeconomic factors on motor function recovery after stroke; and, the impact of brain-drain on physical therapy education in developing countries." Before his appointment at Chapman University, Dr. John was most recently an Associate Professor and Director of Research at the School of Physical Therapy (SOPT), Touro University Nevada (TUN), Henderson, Nevada, USA July 2014 - August 2015. Prior, Dr. John was an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy and Director, Motor Control and Neuromuscular Performance Laboratory at Radford University (RU), Roanoke, VA, USA between August 2011 to May 2014. While at RU, and apart from his teaching responsibilities, Dr. John conducted motor control and neuro-rehabilitation studies on the effects of gender, age-related changes and neurological lesions on sense of motor effort using a feed-forward model of human voluntary motor tasks performance. Prior to his appointment at Radford University, Dr. John was Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy and Director, Motor Control & Neuromuscular Performance Laboratory (MCNPL) at Howard University, Washington DC, USA since October 2006 - May 2011. Dr. John was a doctoral student, Graduate Research and Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) from June 2002-August 2006 where he graduated with a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences. The title of his Doctoral Dissertation is "Effects of Aging, Gender and Dominance on the Sense of Motor Effort and its Potential Application in Stroke". Before departing the shores of Nigeria for the United States in 2002, Dr. John was Associate Lecturer at the Federal School of Physiotherapy, Bayero University, Kano (1996-2002) and Physiotherapist 1 at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala-Kano (1997-2002). Dr. John served as NYSC Physiotherapist at the Specialist Hospital Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State (1995-1996) and Physiotherapist Intern at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano (1994-1995). Dr. John is a graduate of the B.Sc. Physiotherapy program of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos where he graduated with a B.Sc. (Hon), and 2nd class upper division in March of 1994. The title of his BSc Dissertation was "Effects of Isometric Exercise on Resting Blood Pressure of Normotensive Subjects". Prior to his undergraduate studies, he attended Ansar-ud-Deen College, Isolo-Lagos for his Advanced levels studies (1985-87) and New State High School, Palm-Avenue, Mushin-Lagos (1979-1985) for his secondary school education. He also attended Mayflower Junior School, Ikenne, Ogun State (1974-1976) and St. Jude’s Anglican Primary School, Ilasamaja-Lagos (1976-1979) for his primary school education. Dr. John in his student days demonstrated exemplary leadership qualities. He was President of the Nigerian Association of Physiotherapy Students (NAPS) (1992-1994), Sports Secretary of NAPS (1991-1992), Acting Editor PhysioBud, Journal of NAPS (1991-1992), President of Rotaract Club of the CMUL (1992-1993), Club Service Director of Rotaract Club of the CMUL (1991-1992) and President of Science Club of Ansar-ud-Deen College (1986-1987). Dr. John was the Class President of the 1994 BSc Physiotherapy graduating class at the CMUL from 1991-1994. He was also the Socials Prefect at New State High School (1984-1985). He was awarded a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) by Rotary International for his exemplary Youth Leadership skills in 1993. Dr. John was also the first NAPS President to participate in a program of the International Physiotherapy Students Association (IPSA) in Marburg, Germany, August 1992. His report ‘On to Marburg’ remains at the Departmental Library of the Physiotherapy Department, CMUL. Upon graduation as a physical therapist in 1994, Dr. John continued to demonstrate professional leadership potentials. He was the General Secretary of the Kano State Chapter of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy from 1999-2002, pioneer editor of National PhysioNews (official Newsletter of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy) from 2000-2002, past-Assistant Secretary General of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy from 2000-2002 and the Executive Editor of the Nigeria Physiotherapy Network, 2003-present. Dr. John is multi-talented. In his spare time he design websites and is committed to putting Nigeria Physiotherapy on the worldwide web. He designed the first website to advertise and promote Nigeria Physiotherapy online in 1999 (http://www.nigeriaphysionet.8m.com), and in 2003, he designed and launched the present Nigeria Physiotherapy Network website (http://www.nigeriaphysio.net). He also designed the website for the Nigerian Association of Physiotherapy Students (http://www.nigaps.org), University Of Lagos Association Of Physiotherapy Students (http://www.ulaps.org), Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (http://www.nigeriaphysio.org) and the World Congress for Physical Therapy - Africa Region (http://www.wcptafrica.org). He also completed a website design and development project for his former employer, the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala-Kano, Nigeria (http://www.orthopaedicdala.org) and the New York Institute of Technology's School of Health Professions, Behavioral & Life Sciences (http://iris.nyit.edu/hpbls). Dr. John is also a born-again Christian, a preacher and an insightful teacher of God’s word. He oversaw Membership and Discipleship classes at his church family when he was in Kansas City at the Praise Chapel Christian Fellowship as well as designed and maintained the church’s websites (http://www.praisechapelkc.com, http://www.praisechapeltv.org) from 2002-2007. Dr. John is also the United States Coordinator of the Fountain of Wisdom Ministries (http://www.fowm.org) and had oversight over the entire Ministries’ websites (designs and maintenance) and its North American operations. According to Dr. John’s mentor, Dr. Chukuka Enwemeka, Provost and Senior Vice President at San Diego State University, who was instrumental in recruiting him into the PhD program at KUMC while there as the Chair of the Physical Therapy program, “Emmanuel has an impressive background, clear academic vision, maturity and admirable level of motivation to develop himself into a university faculty. Emmanuel is a clear thinker and a hard worker with the type of self-drive, independent thinking, intellectual curiosity and emotional stability sought in young faculty persons. As an individual, he is a team player—always amicable, helpful and considerate of others. Moreover, having assisted me in one of my courses and in some of my previous research activities, I know that he is a well-organized teacher with the ability to handle independent research.” Dr. John had adopted Professor Enwemeka as his mentor in 2001. Dr. John has some published research abstracts, conference presentations at national and international meetings. He also has about five manuscripts in preparation for publication in peer-reviewed Journals.
